What Is PASS?

PASS is Windows software that connects to a shock absorber dynamometer (shock dyno). It tells the dyno what test to run, captures the force and motion data the dyno measures, and turns that data into curves you can analyze, compare, store, and use to tune your dampers.

What Is a Shock Dyno and Why Do Race Teams Use One

A shock dyno, short for shock dynamometer, is a piece of test equipment that measures how a shock absorber performs. The dyno moves the shock through a controlled motion. Sensors capture how much force the shock produces against that motion. The result is a damper curve: a graph that shows force versus velocity or force versus displacement.

Damper curves tell engineers what a shock will actually do on the car. Race teams use shock dynos to validate builds, compare adjuster settings, develop new shock specifications, troubleshoot performance issues, and tune dampers for specific tracks, surfaces, and conditions. Without a shock dyno, damper tuning is guesswork.

Shock dyno software is what turns the raw output of the dyno into useful information. It controls the test. It records the data. It draws the graphs. It compares runs. It exports reports. PASS is that software.

A Modern Replacement for Shock 6 and Roehrig Software

Shock 6 has been the standard shock Dyno software in racing for the better part of twenty years. After MTS acquired Roehrig, development of the racing-side software effectively stopped. Penske Racing Shocks bought the remaining licenses, brought the original software author back in, and built PASS from the ground up to serve race teams again.

PASS keeps the engineering DNA of Roehrig. It opens existing Shock 6 files. It works with the Dyno hardware racers already own (with a hardware update for older units). And it does what the racing community has been asking for since the MTS transition: a modern, supported, actively developed shock Dyno software that race teams can rely on.

PASS Demo Mode is free to download and free to use. Install it on any Windows machine. Open any PASS file or any existing Shock 6 file. View it, compare it against other runs, use every analysis tool the full version offers. The only things Demo Mode does not do are run a dyno and build a test.

PASS works with most Penske and Roehrig Shock6 shock dyno hardware from the last decade. New Penske dynos ship with PASS preinstalled. Older dynos in the field can typically upgrade with software only. Units older than that may need a hardware update to communicate with PASS. Send us your serial number and we will tell you exactly what your machine needs.

How PASS Licensing Works

PASS uses license keys instead of hardware dongles. Buy a license, get a key, activate the software on the machine where you use it. No more lost dongles. No more broken dongles. No more dongle troubleshooting.

Each license includes a one-year subscription that covers all software updates and new features. After year one, an annual maintenance fee keeps the updates flowing. If you skip the maintenance fee, your software keeps working. You just stop receiving updates and new features until you renew.

Multi-seat licensing is supported for race teams that need multiple engineers using PASS at the same time. Volume pricing is available for spec series, OE labs, and university programs.

DCML (Damper Curve Machine Learning) predicts the piston, shim stack, and adjuster settings needed to produce a target damper curve. It saves the time of physically building and dynoing test shocks to find the right combination.

DCML predictions are typically accurate to within one to two percent of the measured curve.

The Shock module works with any damper your dyno can test. DCML is most accurate on Penske dampers because the model is trained on Penske data. It can still be used as a reference tool for other brands.

Each license covers one seat. Race teams can license additional seats at a reduced rate per additional engineer.

Your software keeps working. You stop receiving updates and new features until you renew. You can renew at any time.

Spring, Spec, and Database modules are in development. Sign up for beta access and we will notify you as each module becomes available.

Each IndyCar team receives one PASS license at no charge as part of the 2028 spec shock program. Additional seats for team engineers are available at standard pricing. Contact us for IndyCar-specific licensing details.
