Choosing a Computer for Dyno Testing
The minimum configuration assumes a computer dedicated to PASS during testing. For new purchases, choose the preferred configuration in a desktop or laptop designed for sustained performance, with adequate cooling and capacity for normal background applications. Tablets and ultra-portable computers designed primarily for long battery life may run PASS but have limited capacity for multitasking during testing. They are not our preferred choice for a dedicated dyno computer. Check the complete computer specification—not just the “i5” or “i7” name. For a straightforward purchasing choice, select a mid-range business desktop or laptop meeting our preferred specifications: Intel Core i7, Core Ultra 7, or comparable AMD Ryzen 7; 16 GB memory; a 512 GB SSD or larger; and Windows 11.USB Connections
Two available USB ports are required, including one USB 2.0 port for the motor controller. The data acquisition board can use USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 and must connect directly to the computer—not through a hub, docking station, or monitor.
High-Rate Testing
Above 2 kHz output or 8 kHz sampling, use at least a 6-core processor meeting the minimum processor specification and 16 GB memory. Contact Penske to confirm suitability for the intended test configuration.
During Testing
Keep laptops plugged in, select Best Performance power mode, and prevent sleep. Keep cooling vents clear and follow the dyno setup instructions for USB power settings. Avoid demanding applications and large file transfers while recording.
