FAQ: Sportscar

Q. Are your shock absorbers stocked on the shelf?

A. No, all of our shock absorbers are built to order according to car and driver specifications. Your patience is appreciated while we custom build your shock.

Q. Are Penske Racing Shocks owner rebuildable?

A. Yes, all of our shocks can be rebuilt by the end-user as long as the proper tools are used and instructions followed.

Q. Can I buy shocks directly through you?

A. Yes, shocks can be bought directly from Penske Racing Shocks, as well as at our numerous dealer locations.

Q. How often should I have my shock absorber serviced?

A. We recommend that you have your shock rebuilt (new oil and shims) every 500 miles of racing. A full service is recommended (new seals, oil, and shims) once a year or if the shock is leaking oil excessively.

Q. How can I have my shock serviced?

A. Shocks can be serviced direct through Penske or at an authorized dealer. If you are sending your shocks directly to us, please include the following "Service Form" (completed in full) along with your shock absorber.

Q. Do you dyno the shocks with services?

A. Yes, a dyno sheet is included with the return of your shocks.

Q. How much nitrogen pressure should I run in my shocks?

A. Nitrogen pressure levels can vary depending on how the shock absorber is being utilized. In a normal sports car application, we recommend 125 PSI to 175 PSI. If your damper has a “stiff” compression stack (anything stiffer than a standard C+ stack), we recommend 200 PSI to 250 PSI. NEVER run more than 300 PSI in any Penske Racing Shock.

Q. What viscosity oil do you recommend?

A. Penske Racing Shocks uses Penske Suspension Fluid (Silkolene Pro RSF 5 wt. or 2.5 wt.). We typically use the 2.5 wt. for standard applications. We recommend 5.0 wt. for vehicles that will see excessive miles (more than 500 miles between service) and street applications.

Q. Is it normal to see oil seepage between the shock bearing face and body, piggyback housing and body, shaft and bearing?

A. Yes, after building there will be a slight seepage of oil between mating parts. However, if the oil starts to drip, run, or puddle outside the damper, have the damper sent in for service.

Q. Do you only offer shocks for racing applications?

A. Although we specialize in building shock absorbers for racing applications, we do offer shock packages for certain models of OE manufacturers. Please see our High Performance Street section or call for specific application availability.

Q. How can I become a Penske Racing Shocks authorized dealer?

A. Please complete a "Dealer Application" and return to us with all of the necessary attachments. You will be notified via mail of application approval or denial.
